The Front Room Gallery in New York is hosting an exhibition “47 Years in Waiting- The S.S United States” that will be on view through October 9th, 2016.The exhibition unveils soulful portraits of S.S United States- the majestic ship, captured by New York based photographer Stephen Mallon. The ship holds the record for crossing the Atlantic in the shortest time in 1952, but now it sits forlornly in a dock in Philadelphia. It was built in a time of transition when the means of intercontinental travel were by long boat trips with steamer trunks with lavish splendor. But since the introduction of commercial jet liners, the preferred mode of travel evolved, and the spectacular ship which once carried stars like Judy Garland, Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe, Salvador Dali and others, became obsolete and docked since 1969. Stephen Mallon’s photographs brings forward the images of the current state of the vessel, stripped of her finery, in decay but still elegant. The photographs portray sweeping views of the rusty hull with intimate interior shots of the walkways and great ballrooms, along with the dining room and onboard pool, highlighting the ship’s past splendor. The exhibition is on view at The Front Room Gallery, 147 Roebling Street, Brooklyn, NY 11211, United States.
