Japan Society Gallery in New York is hosting “Simon Starling: At Twilight” (After W.B Yeats’ Noh Reincarnation) theater exhibition from October 14, 2016, through January 11, 2017.Artist Simon Starling, a Copenhagen-based artist born in England, is one of the leading artists of his generation. “At Twilight,” the major installation by Starling incorporates major Western Modernist and classical Japanese artworks that juxtapose on Japan’s traditional, centuries-old and highly ritualized masked, dramatic theater (noh) and explore influence on the avant-garde of this century. In conceptualizing “At Twilight,” Starling took inspiration from W.B Yeats’ one-act play “At The Hawk’s Well,” which sparked interest in noh and Japanese culture among Western audiences with its first staging in London in 1916. Starling pays tribute to the original performance and infuses his own research of classical and Modernist artworks and traditional Japanese art in the 20th century with his own contemporary pieces. The exhibition creates an immersive theatrical environment for the viewer, including a ‘forest’ of new masks and costumes by Starling; a video reenactment of “Hawk’s Dance” from Yeats’ play; and archival materials that Starling used as research, displayed alongside great works from early 20th century Modernism. The exhibition is on view at Japan Society Gallery, 333 East 47th Street, New York, NY 10017, United States.
