“Norogachi: Ceramics After Artaud” an exhibition of works by Los-Angeles based artist Richard Hawkins will run from September 9 through October 22, 2016, at Greene Naftali, New York. This is his fourth solo exhibition with the gallery.Hawkins’ work draws heavily from Antonin Artaud’s journey to the Tarahumara village of Norogachi in Mexico. Using ceramics, the artist tries to understand and decipher Artaud’s drawings of Tarahumaran iconography. These drawings and documentations of their customs and iconography by Artaud have rarely been studied or examined. The exhibition features the artist’s works that combine, compare, and unite several cryptic hieroglyphics from Artaud’s imaginative chronicles. This will be Hawkins’s fifth and final ceramics work based on his Artaud research. The exhibition is on view at Greene Naftali, 508 West 26th Street, Ground Floor & 8th Floor, New York, NY 10001.
