Schloss Kopenick, Berlin plays host to 'In Praise of Good Rule: The Lacquerwork of Gerard Dagly in the Berlin Palace' from July 8 through October 9, 2016.Gerard Dagly was an efficient artist of Baroque lacquerwork. His most important work is the coin cabinet from the cabinet of antiquities of the Prussian royal art collection, the exquisite lacquer design of which is rare in Europe, and carries the essence of serious artistic interaction with East Asian models. As the Director of Ornaments, Dagly was responsible for all the furnishings of cabinet of antiquities in Berlin Palace, which features four coin and medal cabinets and six tables, and the paintings and the gilded sculptures. The exhibition presents this coin cabinet in context.Historic images of the cabinet of antiquities accompany the rich display of the works of art they depict, featuring ancient gold and silver coins, sculptures and gems, an Egyptian death mask, Etruskan beaked jugs, Chinese and Japanese porcelain and lacquerworks, and other examples of Dagly’s works such as the lost Chinese cabinet from the Berlin Palace. The ensemble also includes the monumental catalogue ‘Thesaurus Brandenburgicus selectus’, compiled by Lorenz Berger.Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek of the exhibition.
