The fall edition of 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair, to be held at Somerset House, London, from October 6 – 9, will present the first major solo exhibition in the UK of the late Malian photographer Malick Sidibé.Sidibé (1936-2016) is known for his black-and-white images chronicling the lives and culture of the Malian capital, Bamako, in the wake of the country’s independence. On display will be 45 original prints from 1960s and 1970s. The name of the art fair is a reference to the 54 countries that form the African continent. It strives to represent multiplicity and showcase the diversity of contemporary African art and cultural production on an international stage.Other highlights of the fair include new sculptures by Zak Ové in Somerset House courtyard, presentations by artists Ibrahim El Salahi and Alexandra Karakashian, 1:54 Lounge designed by Ifeanyi Oganwu, and special projects with Addis Foto Fest, Nando’s Art, Worldwide FM by Gilles Peterson, Bandjoun Station and Revue Noire.Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek of the fair.
