An exhibition titled — “This is Presence” — will be on view at the Ballroom Marfa, Texas, from September 23, 2016, through February 5, 2017. The exhibition features the newly commissioned work of artist collective the Institute For New Feeling (IfNf), including the video nominated by Ballroom Marfa for the 2016 season of Artists’ Film International (AFI). In conjunction with the IfNf project, two micro-exhibitions will run simultaneously, hosted by Arturo Bandini. These projects are a response to the theme of AFI 2016, technology. The exhibition features two commissions by the IfNf. The first being a 17-minute video titled “This is Presence,” 2016. The video duplicates the linking actions of web users as they search for answers on the Internet. The artists’ search engine logic acts as a sort of modern oracle system while simulating the marketing mechanisms that optimize online presence. The institute will also showcase an immersive virtual reality experience, created in collaboration with 3D programmer Gary Tyler that tries to decipher the surreal future of online shopping. The micro-exhibitions by Arturo Bandini at the Ballroom Marfa Courtyard, “Sim City” and “Grey Goo Gardens” include the works of 16 artists who will play with and off of the exhibition’s technological themes. The exhibition aims to viscerally and aesthetically explore technology’s effects on our lives and our bodies, through video, sculpture, and virtual reality.
