Liu Jiu Tong’s abstract Chinese landscapes are coming to Hong Kong for the first time, and will be exhibited at Opera Gallery. From September 8-28, his works will be featured alongside a collection of bronzes by renowned American sculptor Richard MacDonald. The cutting-edge Chinese abstract artist will showcase his lyrical paintings inspired by his recent travels, featuring old Shanghainese buildings and seemingly quiet villages. All of these subjects are perpetually surrounded by water in Liu's paintings, which a press release describes as “full of melodic passion, carrying a mystical intellect of a forgotten time.”Liu’s expressive landscapes, composed of vigorous applications of layers of paint, possess a dual quality. Balancing the concrete and the abstract, he has developed a new form of art that seemingly borrows an Eastern spirit, deeply rooted in the Shanghai style culture, while adding aesthetic influences from the West. As such, similar to his fellow Modern Chinese masters, the artist combines Western painting media and techniques with Eastern artistic concepts, staying true to his roots.Liu Jiu Tong's works have appeared in top auctions across the globe, and are part of leading art collections in the region. They have also been displayed in esteemed international shows such as the International Contemporary Art Exhibition in Paris. The gallery will also simultaneously exhibit figurative bronze sculptures by celebrated artist Richard MacDonald, whose works evoke performances of everyday life. As he sculpts from live models, he is able to immortalize “the grace, strength, joy, and discipline of dancers and acrobats.” MacDonald is a prominent advocate of the Neo-figurative movement in visual arts. His artworks can be found in reputable private and corporate art collections such as AT&T, IBM, and Bill and Hillary Clinton's collection.“Liu Jiu Tong” and “Richard MacDonald” will run from September 8-28 at Opera Gallery, Hong Kong.
