Demonstrating innumerable variant images comprising of 19th, 20th c. and contemporary works of art, “The Image as Question: An Exploration of Evidential Photography” will be put on view at the Michael Hoppen Gallery, London from 26 September thru 26 November 2016.Part of the beguilement with all photography is that the medium is resolutely stranded in the documentary tradition. It has been exercised to document crime scenes, zoological specimens, lunar and space exploration, phrenology, fashion and importantly, art and science and also modest things such as family holidays and equally of atrocities taking place on the global stage. Acceptance of evidential language entrenched in the medium is very substantial for any contemporary artist. In this exhibition at the Michael Hoppen Gallery, most of the images being exhibited were never intended as beautifully crafted or well-composed images rather were meant to serve a purpose which now no longer prevails, it’s their aesthetic beauty and informative nature that makes them worthy of being put on view. The images appear dissimilar but have a shared sobriety, a heft that springs from their documentary function. In times of cultural or academic hardships, the brains that pondered over techniques to record these evidence, were earnest of achievement.
