Canadian artist Karel Funk’s exhibition at the Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG) in Manitoba runs through October 2. Funk is known for his depiction of the urban individual craving anonymity and privacy. His compelling portraits of lone figures comprise his signature work. The exhibition is the first survey of his paintings from across the continent. The exhibition explores the evolution of Funk’s work. It begins with the artist’s portrayals of hooded figures — his response to the conflicting senses of familiarity and anonymity that he experienced in New York subways. His recent work features "bundled, crumpled, and knotted outerwear," with the human form completely negated from the images, placing them within a post-humanist figurative painting tradition.Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek of the exhibition.
