“After Voices” at Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation (SCAF) in Sydney is an immersive installation by Indonesian multidisciplinary artist Jompet Kuswidananto. Curated by Indonesian curator and writer Alia Swastika, Program Director for Ark Galerie in Yogyakarta, “After Voices” is SCAF’s 32nd project. The departure point for the installation was the artist’s own personal experience of the social hysteria and trauma that followed the fall of Indonesian President Suharto’s New Order regime in 1998 – a time when frequent demonstrations enabled long-suppressed voices to be finally heard.“After Voices” transforms the violence and turmoil of the referenced events into a carnivalesque parade populated by life-size “ghost figures” made from clothing, helmets, mechanical hands, motorcycle headlights, and musical instruments. The many people wanting and attempting to have their voice to heard over the noise of the chaos are symbolized by the flags, megaphones, television monitors, drums, and the rows of empty shoes that surround the life-size “ghost figures.”“After Voices” is at Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation in Sydney until September 10, 2016Watch the video above to see what Jompet Kuswidananto had to say about the installation and click the slideshow to see images.
