K11 Art Foundation (KAF) is launching the first exhibition of “As Far As Near” with Hong Kong poet and artist AMA, entitled “The Inferno,” continuing its ambition to support the development of Chinese contemporary art.“As Far As Near” is a project consisting of four consecutive and distinctly themed exhibitions related to the title, which will be presented at chi art space in Central, Hong Kong. The first exhibition, “The Inferno,” opens on June 16.Evidently inspired by 14th century Italian philosopher and poet Dante Alighieri’s “Divine Comedy: Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradiso,” the exhibition is an allegory of AMA’s spiritual and emotional journey through darkness. It is designed as a Dantesque metaphorical dark forest with scattered leaves, and the artist uses wood as her main medium. The show features a diverse range of artworks including paintings, poetry and music-based works created by the artist over the past five years. Additionally, Hong Kong musicians William Lane and Heidi Law will perform two spiritual performances about “The Inferno.”In this exhibition, the audience will embark on AMA’s difficult journey of past traumas, struggle and confrontation with alcoholism through dark corridors, leading to various rooms. As the viewer proceeds through the dim, narrow labyrinth, rooms appear to get brighter — a metaphor for the artist’s battle to leave the darkness, the inferno, to reach the light at the end of the tunnel signifying the stage of purification.AMA is a graduate of the Fine Arts Department of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and is currently undertaking a Master's in Expressive Arts Therapy at the University of Hong Kong. The musician and songwriter has performed in a variety of venues in Hong Kong, Korea and China, as well as on various broadcasting platforms such as RTHK, TVB and ATV. Additionally, she has released three albums: “Seoulful” (2007), “A Taste of Life” (2010), and her latest self-produced solo album “The Inferno” (2015).“The Inferno” exhibition runs from June 16 through July 19 at K11's chi art space.
