A series of new works by New York-based Israeli artist Yigal Ozeri will make their debut at Hong Kong’s Opera Gallery this week.Known for his astonishingly photorealistic style and immaculate finish made up of thousands of finely detailed brushstrokes, Ozeri has a marked predilection for a classical vision of female beauty, augmented by warm backlit scenes, the angelic glow of aura-like presences, and hazy parabolas of refracted light.Historically, artists like Jan van Eyck and Johannes Vermeer used various tools such as the camera obscura to project an image onto their canvas while tracing its contours in real time. In contrast, Ozeri works directly from digital captures of his chosen scenes, thereby interposing an additional step in the process, while imparting an additional layer of detachment and reflection to his photorealistic renderings.Born in Israel in 1958, Ozeri is an acclaimed photorealistic painter whose work has been included in the exhibition “50 Years of Hyperrealistic Paintings,” which traveled to multiple institutions including the Museum Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, and the Museo de Bellas Artes in Bilbao. His work can be found in the collections of many of the world’s leading museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Jewish Museum in New York, the Albertina in Vienna, and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.Yigal Ozeri’s “Shadows of Reality” runs June 16-30, 2016 at Opera Gallery Hong Kong.
