Manolo Valdés is presenting his first solo exhibition in the UK in over 10 years with some of his latest works across a variety of mediums (canvas, paper, sculpture), underlying the rich variety of his oeuvre. His distinct figurative paintings combine thickly applied oil paint and hessian sacking with a collage-like technique of cutting and sewing onto the canvas in relief, while his sculptures use a variety of materials such as aluminum, bronze, wood, iron, and for this exhibition, alabaster mixed with oxidized iron.Valdés’s sculptures of women’s heads adorned with butterflies or ferns have become highly recognizable. Watch as the artist talks about his interest in the female form and how an “accident” can be appropriated to create an unusual final work. The works will be displayed at Marlborough Fine Art through July 16.Click on the slideshow to see photos of the exhibition.
