Taiwanese artist Wang Yahui’s abstract multimedia work is on display in Taipei at a new exhibition from the gallery TKG+.“Wang Yahui: A Slant of Light” features a collection of photographs, video installations, and sculpture that explore the nature and boundaries of time and space. “Reconfiguring the concept of space, Wang invites viewers to reconsider its fluid, impalpable nature, as they become immersed in where they are and riveted by what they see,” the gallery explained in a press release.Wang Yahui’s work is heavily influenced by the writing of Tang dynasty poet Wang Wei, who sought to evoke the beauty of China’s landscape through the lens of his tempestuous internality. The title of this show is drawn from Wang Wei’s poetry.Italian painter Giorgio Morandi is also a major influence of Wang’s. Morandi’s paintings of bottles use the same sort of anonymous grey backdrops as many of Wang’s images. Morandi used these backdrops to create the gritty reality and the sense of existential despair of his native Italy, while Wang uses them to create an unreality, the sense of unidentifiability creating an abstract space.Wang Yahui melds this style with the artistic approach of Wang Wei, creating the unique aesthetic on display at TKG+.“Wang Yahui: A Slant of Light” runs through June 5 at TKG+ in Taipei.
